You need not understand every teaching before you begin reading scripture. First ask sincerely: what do I most wish to understand now? Life’s destination, the foundations of faith, or how to practise compassion in daily life? An honest question can open the way into the texts.
If you are reflecting on life, death and our ultimate destination, begin with Volume 1, The World of Eternal Life. To clarify faith and examine possible deviations in practice, turn to Volume 2, Clear-Sighted Faith. Volume 3, The True Meaning of Life, invites deeper inquiry into the world, life and the self.
For a more concise scripture, Volume 4, The Awakening of Life, brings together the Heart Sūtra, Diamond Sūtra and Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment. Choose one, read slowly and return to its context. When you wish to study the stages of meditation more deeply, continue with Volume 5, The Essentials of Meditation.
Volume 6, The Holy Physician for Humanity, brings practice into family and society, asking how to accompany those who suffer and examine ourselves through service. Volume 7, The Path to Holiness, leads personal seeking towards lasting commitment, sharing the teaching and responsibility.
The seven volumes have a connected progression, while each also offers a theme for independent study. After reading a passage, pause. Note what you understand, what remains uncertain and one thing you wish to practise. Understanding can deepen gradually; practice can begin today.
